Welcome to the team that makes Progress through Scuba happen, like all such organisations it is the hard work behind the scenes that make the difference to our success and to the veteranss' we aim to help. So meet our team.
Founder and Chairperson
Magi Mathieson is the Chairman of PTSD-Progress Through Scuba Diving and is also the brains and engine room behind all our charity work.
Magi has been married to Jim for 23 years and has been the pillar of support throughout Jim’s military career. She has singlehandedly raised two boys with some sporadic help from Jim, when he was at home. Magi is a font of knowledge when it comes to charity legislation and the laws in which the charity must operate to.
Jim Mathieson is the vice-Chairman and Treasurer of PTSD-Progress Through Scuba Diving and is also a certified PADI Divemaster. He started his diving journey back in the mid-90s’ but due to career ambitions put his diving progression on hold.
Jim spent 24 years in the UK armed forces, spending most of that time with 1st Bn The Black Watch. He has conducted numerous combat tours in Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan. He retired from the military in 2012 and started a second career with Shell as an HSE professional. Jim suffered from PTSD after his tours in Iraq and was the first to take up the challenge from Kevin James, the charity Director of Dive operations, to see if therapeutic dives would help – He has been managing his PTSD symptoms well since giving it a go in 2019, and is known as Diver A.
Jim has an MSc in management (Oil and Gas Programme) from the University of Liverpool and is a fellow at the Institute of Leadership and Management. He brings a wealth of business acumen to the charity as well as his diving experience.
Jim is married to Magi and has three boys, Kieran, Arras and Aird.
Director of Dive Operations and Co- Founder
Kevin James joined the British Military at 18 years of age as a Military Policeman. Following a 5 year period he transferred to the Army Physical Training Corps and spent 10 years as an Instructor specialising in recreational scuba diving. During this time he acquired a number of qualifications from Royal Navy Sub Aqua Diving Supervisor to British Sub Aqua Club Advanced Instructor. Following his leaving the Army to follow a scuba diving and private island management career he qualified as a PADI Master Scuba Diving Trainer and Technical Diver.
Lawrie became a Trustee in September 2021. As a serving member of the Armed Forces, he has been posted to some fantastic places including Hong Kong, Germany and Kuwait. Lawrie has also deployed to several theatres including Kosovo, Iraq, Yemen and Afghanistan. A big fan of the outdoors, Lawrie enjoys hillwalking, sea kayaking and running and when time permits, doing DIY badly. Lawrie’s reason for becoming a Trustee is to give something back to the veterans community and where possible, help those who are most in need whether that is through ‘Progress Through Scuba Diving’ or in support to others who want to make a difference to the lives of Veterans.
